Step Back In Time (continued): LA LA Land

This is a follow up to “Step Back In Time: Lost in LA” http://lindabyharrison.com/2012/03/step-back-in-time/

So, the next day I woke up to this:

Not bad I’d say! But nothing like the view in the evening:

The point in sharing these photos is to say that when the skies are blue, it makes it easier to clear your head of clutter and start the day fresh. My week in LA began and I was open to any opportunity that might come my way. It’s been said that British people are reserved and sometimes come across as unfriendly, the opposite is true of LA people. I was stopped every day by someone wanting to give me a compliment, often these compliments turned into conversations which turned into “I know somebody that does videos/music/clothes/gigs - maybe they could help you”. The whole culture is far more relaxed, which made it so much easier for me to settle in and get to work.

While I was out there I was co-writing, finding contacts for music venues, making friends and getting inspired. It was all preparation for the things you’re going to see over the next 18 months. Particularly look out for the song “Supermodel” (written with Jacques Brautbar ex-Phantom Planet), some LA inspired clothing/jewellery and fingers crossed an American tour next March (2013).

Keep your eyes pealed for Step Back In Time: Part 3 where I find myself homeless (not for long) and I arrive at SXSW, the biggest festival for new music.

LA & SXSW 2011

It’s time I told you how the trip went.

First of all, I’ll tell you a little of the background. First of all, it was to re-inspire me, to give me hope and to help re-ignite my passion for what I do.* Secondly it was to make some progression by meeting with people, writing with people and learning from watching as many bands as possible. Thirdly, it was an adventure and a getaway. I booked the trip myself and flew 5550 miles round the world solo. Travelling alone is the only way to ensure that you meet new people. I went to Los Angeles (Venice Beach) for a week, then South By South West (SXSW is probably the biggest festival for new music. Austin, TX), then back to Los Angeles (Santa Monica & Hollywood).

The main thing I’ve been telling everyone is how many incredible people I met. Alex Da Kid was quoted saying “If you want to be the best, you have to be around the best”; I certainly felt like I was around the best. I was hanging out with people so far ahead of me; it feels strange knowing I can contact all these people, but not knowing how to lift myself onto the same platform as them. Anyway, at least I know it’s achievable again.

I saw some awesome bands and was particularly happy to see and talk to City and Colour - I was shocked at how few Americans knew who they were though, what’s up with that?!?!

Anyway, to conclude. My passion is re-ignited and my hope restored. Progression was made as the business card spread, songs were written and some unbelievably refreshing music was heard. Finally, it was an adventure, and possibly an unexpected reward was the freedom it has given me.

There’s a lot more to be said for the trip, but I think I’ll keep that to my personal diary. To all of you, I recommend you travel alone at least once. I’d highly recommend Austin as a place to go for music lovers.

Much love,

HARRISON

*Note: None of this had completely died. However, my life as a musician was becoming more and more strained. As much as I love hard work, it’s difficult working when you feel like you’re not moving forward.

a wee music diary…

I think I mentioned this girl before: Oh Land. As much as this doesn’t look/sound live, apparently it is, and I believe them. Man, I wish I could afford her mic.

Next - Frankmusik - how can he afford to be giving so much free music away? Check it out here: http://freefrankmusik.com/

Another thing I’ve mentioned before, but my friend runs a music blog called Milky Tea Kid, and I’d love it if you checked out her site http://www.milkyteakid.com

The shop will most likely be shutting down over March while I’m out in LA - again, if you know anybody out there that would be up for meeting up, let me know.
